This ointment was created specifically for sprains by Zhou Guo-jun and others at the Guanzhou Qian Southeast Autonomous Region Chinese Medical Hospital. It acts to clear heat, quicken the blood, dispel stasis, free the flow of the network vessels, relax sinews, and stop pain. Particularly recommended for treatment of ankle sprains combined with acupuncture or acupressure.

Functions of Herbs used in Formula
*Da Huang (Radix Et Rhizoma Rhei) clears heat, quickens the blood, and dispels stasis.
*Ze Lan (Herba Lycopi Lucidi) also quickens the blood and dispels stasis.
*Di Long (Pheretima) clears heat and frees the flow of the network vessels.
*Zhi Zi (Fructus Gardeniae) clears heat and stops bleeding, disperses swelling and dispels stasis due to traumatic injury.
*Er Cha (Acacia Catechu) stops bleeding.
*Ru Xiang (Olibanum) moves the qi and quickens the blood, disperses swelling, relaxes the sinews.
*Bing Pian (Borneolum) clears heat and stops pain.

To Use: Apply to the affected area and fix with a dressing. Change daily. In addition, needle Shang Qiu (Sp 5), Jie Xi (St 41), Qiu Xu (GB 40), Kun Lun (Bl 60), and/or Tai Xi (Ki3) depending on the site of sprain. For best results, keep the affected limb elevated and restrict use. Acupressure at the above points may also be used instead of acupuncture for home treatment by the patient or a family member.
